Toshiba Corp. said Thursday it has been entrusted with manufacturing high-end image-processing semiconductor chips for U.S. chipmaker Xilinx Inc.
Production of the so-called field-programmable gate array chips is scheduled to begin early next year at Toshiba's plant in Oita Prefecture, the company said. It is the first time Toshiba has decided to make semiconductor chips for U.S. companies.
Toshiba said it will invest an additional 25 billion yen this fiscal year for the production of FPGA chips, which are used in such products as TV sets and mobile computerized terminals with image-processing features.
