The Evolution of Data Processing

Data Processing has changed greatly over time. While one can track the beginnings of the modern analytical computer to Charles Babbage (1791-1871), we really saw the beginning of modern day information systems during World War II when they were used as code busters. After the war, few anticipated how much computers would affect our lives. Early on even IBM thought that there would only be a handful of companies that would need a computer.

In those days, computers were massive systems based on vacuum tubes and core memory. With the advent of the integrated circuit, computer architectures took a giant leap forward. The mainframe systems of the late 1980's evolved into Client/Server applications of the early 1990's. In parallel, the Internet grew from a few engineer and research systems to a World Wide network. It wasn't until an Al Gore authored bill allowing commerce to be carried out over the Internet did things really start to change. Every business, every organization, had to carve out a space on "The Net."

The ubiquitous nature of The Internet made it the perfect way for business to have a global reach while maintaining a local presence. Soon, application vendors were making Internet based applications. Today, solution providers are exploiting service oriented architectures and BPEL to provide more agile environments in which to do business.

Today, combining Internet access with massive, inexpensive compute power, data processing has been transformed from an ancillary function of accounting departments to mechanisms by which organizations can transform and enhance their internal processing while integrating their interactions with customers and suppliers.

The key to modern day data processing is not simply the automation of some manual process. Today, business realizes that data processing, information systems, change the very processes that are used to run the business. They not only do same things more efficiently, the do thins differently.

In the past an order was printed and sent to a supplier. The order was received and, if the item was in stock, it was shipped. Items not in stock were placed on back order. Today with Supply chain integration, the entire supply chain is integrated into one network. Warehouse management software notifies suppliers when stock levels drop and order are placed. The suppliers themselves use data mining and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) software to predict ordering patterns and anticipate customer needs.

Even how businesses interact with their customers has changed. In the past, businesses used mass marketing to appeal to the greatness number of possible customers. Today, we have mass customization where businesses on a group basis provide customized goods and services.

No, this is not your father's data processing. No longer is the world of data processing a pocket-protector clad engineer's world of spinning tapes and punched cards. Today, data processing and data entry affects all our lives in ever new and more exciting ways.

Document management speeds NHS data entry by 80% in Scotland

NHS Scotland is rolling out document management and imaging software across 22 health boards to reduce manual data entry processes by 80%.

The project is part of Scotland's efficient government initiative that is driving the setting up of shared services throughout the health service.

The NHS in Scotland is already saving £2.9m a year by implementing a single set of business processes and sharing management software.

John Francis, programme director from the shared support services programme, said rolling out Version One's document management software would help meet the government's planned efficiency targets.

He said the software would be integrated with the NHS's COA Solutions accounting systems to enable hospitals to free up document storage space, eliminate third-party document storage costs, and allow staff to be redeployed.

"We look forward to reducing the number of paper documents the Scottish NHS generates and expect a substantial return on investment," said Francis.

Data processing systems are often called information systems for this reason.

In data processing, data is converted by computer into understandable, coherent information. Data is only useful when it is organized and meaningful in practical terms. Data processing systems are often called information systems for this reason. In practice, either term may be used, since data processing or information processing systems both convert raw data into information as output that can be understood and used by people.

Most companies develop criteria for data entry and only make changes when forced to do so. Few companies conduct a thorough periodic review of their data entry procedures and processes. When the initial data entry format continues to be used without review, the resulting information may decrease in usefulness to the company and efficiency is likely to be greatly reduced.

Seldom are data entry employees asked for their opinions on how the data entry processes could be made faster, easier, and more efficient. Even companies in the business of creating task forces in sales, marketing, and process improvement rarely see data entry as a key concern for review. This mistake can be costly. Adding more processes to an outdated system every time a new marketing idea comes along can result in cumbersome, inaccurate data of little value.

Data Entry Software

Data entry software is an application program that accepts data from the keyboard or other input device and stores it in the computer for processing. It may be part of an application that also provides updating, querying and reporting. The data entry software establishes the data in the database and should test for all possible input errors.

There are millions of forms filled out and being processed in each country every year. Specialized data entry service providers throughout the world provide most of forms processing. Data entry software for forms processing provides needed technical support in the business. Most technical questions are answered in minutes via phone, fax or e-mail.

There are many powerful data entry and image entry programs with proper backup systems available that can easily collect, key verify, reformat and output data the way you want it.

This software works with industry standard hardware and operating systems. You can update system components quickly and safely whenever you like. If you move, your data entry and image entry software moves with you.

There is data entry software that allows you to convert your existing applications. In many cases, near-perfect conversion can move virtually your entire program library. Many companies' data capture program applications can be converted in a week or less, saving money by moving their programming investments into modern computer systems.

For imaging, image entry software offers the workhorse functionality of traditional data entry software. Built from the ground up for data capture, such data entry programs include a state of the art image entry program that can be activated with a simple phone call; the programs are dedicated to the needs of data entry service organizations. There are programs to set resolution on individual zones within an image. Data entry operators can also zoom and pan an image on the screen.

Data Entry provides detailed information on Data Entry, Data Entry Services, Offshore Data Entry, Data Entry Outsourcing and more. Data Entry is affiliated with Business Intelligence Data Mining.

Super Cheap ditches data entry

LAST year, when Super Cheap Auto Group diversified from automotive products into boating, camping and fishing gear, its finance staff were close to breaking point because of an archaic invoicing process.

The retailer stocks more than 10,000 items and was receiving some 45,000 invoices a month, which had to be manually entered into the database.

While this was causing problems for the business, finance manager Stephen Fleming says it wasn't until the group started rolling out its boating, camping and fishing outlets in early 2006 that it decided it was time for a change.

Physician Data Entry Is The Solution - Technology Information

How a group of physicians were persuaded to manipulation information entrance point of care electronic checkup records to cut costs and increase efficiency. The dream of computerized medical checkup records has been discussed at length by physicians and in the journals. Yet with extensive review of many of these MD entering electronic medical examination phonograph recording programs (PDE-EMRs), we at New to(p) United Mexican States Orthopaedic Associates (NMOA) were not sure that the engineering was ready for the masses of physicians, many who were not willing to spend countless hours in training. And, taking 15-20 minutes of medico-computing device time to create a single medical exam note, as the standard big name products did, was an obstacle that we could not endure. One day in 1995, a local known as us and said that he was involved with ingress electronic health check disk (PDE-EMR) engineering science and wondered if we had the time to return a look at his plan, named the HUB Computing machine Checkup System. It was oriented approximately a health care manufacture modelling the Foresighted Pattern Guideline Modelling (FPG).

The local , Dr. Thomas Naegele, is a Family Praxis workings emergency rooms in Unexampled and Arizona hospitals. References remarked on his excellent aesculapian skills in the ER, so we decided to go ahead and meet with him. Naegele that we rich person two non-negotiable requirements for a PDE-EMR organization: (1) it must be ultimately flexible and adaptable to any of out clinical settings and, (2) capture by the cannot slow the process down. During his demonstration of the HUB Computing device Medical checkup System, we learned that Dr. Naegele is also a college-trained data processor systems analyst. We were amazed that this platform following the FPG modeling, though really simpleton, appeared to handle wholly situations within clinical and the business of . It looked like his system of rules would meet our requirements. Continued from page 1. At present tense, there is alone(p) 1 foresighted simulation and merely I object oriented applied science theoretical account. They the same product- HUB.

The most popular computerized electronic disc is the transcriptionist-typed, dictated report. In some of these cases, physicians wealthy person access to these notes for either viewing or manipulation. What Type of Person Can Solve the Physician-Electronic computer Interface.

There is no clear-cut solution for PDE-EMR at represent. But after with the HUB arrangement and Dr. Naegele for the last 3 days, this may be what the diligence necessarily. Through many hours of with Dr. Naegele and his formal education in calculator systems analysis, his industriousness study is real impressive and seems to be the correct way to find the answer to this unsolved problem.

Naegele has been on PDE-EMR since 1983; he has been using computers since 1970. When he entered school in the summer of 1979, he already knew fourteen figurer languages and nine different estimator operating systems. Naegele clearly has superior skills in systems analysis and has the ability to realize big and complicated systems, along with the ability to takings paper/by hand systems and develop them into systems. The FPG Modeling is well thought-out, but it can yield old age to fully realise that it puts the complete power of the into the hands of the at the point of care.

ABCs of Data Processing - Issue #1

I've been working in Direct Mail for over 17 years in the data processing field. I now own a marketing firm, but always wondered why it's so hard for people to understand the concept of data processing. Of course I live and breathe it so it's easy for me to say that, right?

A client of mine suggested that I should take all of my knowledge and write a book to help other people. He also commented that I explained things in laymen terms so people could truly understand what was being done to their data so I am going to do my best to help and you are my first readers.

Image processing a booming market

Experts in the field of image processing, such as Siemens, Frost & Sullivan, the German Engineering Federation and people from the German Fraunhofer Allianz, all agree that there are very promising trends towards three- dimensional imaging, texture analysis, high-speed cameras, colour recognition and thermography.

Looking at the not-so-distant horizon, we will see the greatest amount of innovation in data processing, recognition software and optical resolution performance.

Image-processing applications already range from industrial uses and security systems to transport-ation and medical technology. Industry experts, however, agree that only about 20% of all possible applications have been addressed so far. Siemens ‘Pictures of the Future Fall 2006’ stresses that, according to estimates provided by a number of manufacturers, the worldwide market volume for machine vision systems currently amounts to about €6,5-billion, with annual growth rates extending into the double-digit range.

Spatial filtering in optical data-processing

Optical data-processing is generally considered to have begun with Abbe's theory of image formation in the microscope. Since then the subject has expanded greatly until at this point in time it includes a plethora of techniques ranging from the simplest one-lens Fourier analysers and multipliers through coherently and incoherently illuminated correlators and processors to electro-optic devices and computer processing of optically logged data.

To review the complete range of techniques and applications adequately is not possible within this article which is restricted, therefore, to a discussion of optical imaging techniques employing coherent illumination that are designed to process the input signal by the inclusion of masks and spatial frequency filters that control the system transfer function. Emphasis will be put on the characteristics of those spatial frequency filters and the processed images produced with them. The article will introduce the basic theory of coherently illuminated optical systems in terms of the Fourier transform relationships that exist between specific planes of those systems, including a discussion in general terms of the influence of masks and filters on the imaging characteristics of those systems. The major portion of the article will present a detailed examination of the properties of specific spatial frequency filters. They will be discussed firstly under a classification of filter types where their individual data processing characteristics will be elaborated and then, in summary, they will be reviewed within a classification of data processing function. Finally an appendix is included which further elaborates the theory of coherently illuminated optical systems, detailing the exact relationships between the complex amplitude distributions occurring in the principle and other planes of such optical systems.

It's a Multi-Core World: Let the Data Flow

A functional parallelism paradigm that fits multi-core processor architecture

The multi-core buzz is everywhere. Pick up a newspaper and the local electronics mega-store is advertising multi-core desktops and laptops to the consumer. Interesting, but what does it mean to the everyday Java programmer? Maybe nothing. If you live in the application server world writing EJB-based applications your application server does most of the heavy lifting for you. It handles concurrency just fine. But that doesn't cover all applications. Multi-core technology will especially affect applications that must process large amounts of data in a non-transactional (outside of a database context) manner. For this class of applications, the implications of multi-core are huge.

Commentary: Beyond data processing

Analysis contributes to better management

Before 1999, most agencies that are required to comply with the Chief Financial Officers Act received less than unqualified opinions on their annual financial statement audits. Furthermore, most took more than three months to produce those “less-than-pristine” financial statements.

Fast forward to 2006, when 19 of 24 CFO Act agencies received clean opinions on their statements and all produced their statements within 45 days after the end of the fiscal year.

Perhaps we should close the government and have a huge block party to celebrate. I think not.

Automatic Data Processing Rises on Fiscal 2008 Forecast, Analyst Upbeat on Long-Term Value

Shares of Automatic Data Processing Inc. climbed Tuesday, after the payroll and tax filing processor forecast fiscal 2008 profit and sales growth on the heels of fiscal fourth-quarter results that topped Wall Street expectations.

The stock rose $1.06, or 2.3 percent, to $47.13 in afternoon trading.

Separately, ADP reported a lower fiscal fourth-quarter profit, as results a year ago were helped by a large gain from the sale of its claims services group.

Sales in the quarter rose 13 percent to top Wall Street expectations, as revenue at ADP's employer services segment — the company's largest unit — rose 12 percent.

Baird analyst Mark Marcon said ADP has many solid long-term growth prospects, including tapping international markets and acquisitions, which have been a "top priority" for ADP.

"Given the large cash balance, ADP maintains significant flexibility for strategic acquisitions and share buybacks," Marcon wrote in a client note.

Marcon said ADP is capable of reporting earnings per share growth between 10 percent and 15 percent over the next five to 10 years, provided strong organic revenue growth continues.

Chief Financial Officer Chris Reedy said growth prospects remain strong in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in China, where ADP has inked contracts with BMW and Mercedes Benz.

"We're seeing dynamic growth coming out of China," Reedy said.

Looking at the fiscal fourth quarter, Chief Executive Gary Butler said results were helped by new client contracts, organic revenue growth and improvement in margins. Butler also said the company still has $1.9 billion in cash on its balance sheet and expects share buybacks to continue.

Outsourcing Data Entry: The Outsourcing Success Story

Although a company's data entry work is often among the most monotonous jobs imaginable, they require the skills of trained personnel. For all its tedium, data entry is essential to a company's survival, without being one of its core operations, and many companies have turned to outsourcing data entry work so that its employees can spend their time on more lucrative matters. The data entry tasks will be performed by competent contractors in developing nations like India, Malaysia, China, and Brazil, and for a much lower cost than it would require if it continued to be done in-house.

How Outsourcing Data Entry Works

Companies have been outsourcing data entry work almost as long as the global technological development has supported outsourcing. The outsourcing of data entry work requires a company to either mail hard copies of its data forms, or scan and email or fax, electronic images of them, to the outsource contractors who will complete the data entry job.

The data entry workers then input information into a database on a computer, and either store it on a magnetic medium for shipping or email it back to the sending company in encrypted form.

Because data entry jobs do not require and advanced degree of computer savvy, outsourcing data entry work is far less difficult than outsourcing more complex processes. Data entry work does not demand an ongoing communication between the outsourcing company and the data entry provider, and the outsourcing of data entry work to date entry firms in underdeveloped nations has for the most part been one of the big outsourcing success stories.

Freelance Data Entry Outsourcing

The Internet, of course, has played a huge part in the increase of data entry workers, in particular in poorer countries, who freelance their services. A simple Internet search will bring up dozens of sites shopping the services of data entry coders who work for what would be considered starvation wages in Europe or the US.

These data entry workers normally price their services according to both the sizes of the requested projects, and their own work histories. Outsourcing data entry work to these coders is usually a matter of posting the specifics of a job, and letting the various coders make bids on it. The going rate for data entry jobs can begin at less than $100, but there is no guarantee that the coder whose bid is accepted will actually complete the job as specified. While most of the reverse auction sites will return the money for an incomplete or substandard effort, the data entry still has not been finished, and business operations may fall behind until it is.

Data Modeling

The cost of information technology has come down dramatically over the last ten years. Everything has become smaller, cheaper, faster. As a result of this, smaller retailers are now able to do things that only the largest chains were able to afford only a dozen years ago. To take advantage of this revolution in IT capabilities, retailers need to know what to do. The trick is to know which of the many opportunities available is the one that will give you a competitive advantage and make your customer want to drive past your competitor to get to your store.

One of the most valuable tools now affordable to smaller retailers is data modeling. This is a use of a data warehouse that can accelerate the development of new applications and processes. It can reduce the cost and risk of examining different alternatives. It can make raw data actionable.

Most retailers have a good deal of raw data from inventory, promotions, POS transactions and loyalty programs. Very few retailers can turn this data into the daily decisions that improve the business. Data modeling can help build targeted promotions based on loyalty information and evaluate the results of the promotion. It can improve the accuracy of forecasting and assortment planning.

I have recently been involved in a number of projects to define the next generation of the store. One of the defining components of the best of breed future store projects is the use of data modeling to evaluate the many different options that are available. I've seen projects that were designing store capabilities, which relied on decisions requiring unobtainable data. Easily available, understandable, actionable information seems to be the critical success factor for the next generation store. No matter how exciting the ambiance and merchandising layout, if you can't make good day to day decisions, a new format will not be successful enough to warrant the expense of the change.

Most future store projects will require a new business model to be successful. Data modeling can allow a retailer to find the best model and tweak that model to let it evolve with the customer and store format.

The first step is to get the enterprise data into a data warehouse that is compliant with the Association for Retail Technology Standards (ARTS) Data Model.

Open standards are important attributes that now make data modeling more accessible and affordable. A caveat is that you cannot make decisions from data that you don't have. It is important to have a good POS system that collects detail data by store, by customer, by SKU, by time frame, by payment method, etc. Security and privacy of the data is also a showstopper if you do not have it. See the article on Data Governance in an earlier issue of XR23.

There are data management tool kits available that have detailed retail content to reduce the development time significantly.

A data modeling project for a small retailer does not have to start out with every thing in place to get benefit. The project can focus on one aspect that will provide the highest return and add other capabilities as everyone becomes more familiar with the tools. This is also an area that benefits from outtasking. Outtasking is the outsourcing of a narrow function or task such as POS training or data model creation.

One of the biggest benefits of a retail data model comes from understanding the customer. The data model can provide: campaign and promotion information with cross purchase behavior along with customer attrition, complaints, credit risk, delinquency, interaction, lifetime value, loyalty, profile movement, profitability and market basket analysis.

What Is Enterprise Data Integration

Enterprise data integration is the process of combining information from various business data resources on demand to fulfill particular enterprise requirements. It also includes the sharing of data among various business applications. Enterprise data integration is considered as one of the most needed Customer Relationship Management (CRM) practices. Today, enterprise data integration is widely practiced by all companies and business groups, especially Internet-based companies. There are also many types of data integration systems and software programs designed for this purpose.

There are many advantages of enterprise data integration. This includes reduction in data accumulation, elimination of duplicate data, decrease in time expenditure in capturing data, quick data delivery, fast data sharing, time and capital saving by automated data entry, escape form manual report preparing and printing, better product marketing, on demand data availability, better customer data integration, better customer contact management, enhancement in sales force automation processes (SFA), and simplification of all business procedures.

Enterprise data integration cover a range of data management techniques such as MDI (Master Data Management), EII (Enterprise Information Integration), ETL (Extract-Transform-Load), EAI (Enterprise Application Integration), CDI (Customer Data Integration) and SOA (Service Oriented Architecture). The general processes involved in enterprise data integration procedure are data consolidation, data federation and data propagation or data migration. Automated customer contact management, leads generation, task management and account management are some applications of enterprise data integration.

The enterprise data processing systems and software programs, commonly known as enterprise data integration solutions are talented to accessing multiple remote databases in tandem, providing real-time meaningful information and resources. They are programmed to put right information in right places. The main data storing devices are consolidation repositories, data warehouses and data marts. The enterprise data entry software programs are equipped with advanced communication tools, either internet-linked or local network-linked, which help in integrating all resources.

Generally there are five levels in an enterprise data integration procedure. That are, enterprise portals or user interfaces that include customer contact sites such as payment processing solutions, sale systems and bookkeeping systems; collaboration tools or software programs that coordinates all proceedings; business process management systems; enterprise applications integration tools and systems and enterprise information integration tools.

Well implemented enterprise data integration solutions eliminate data latency, false/duplicate data entry and data pollution. A perfect solution must be able to obtain data from all company resources and from all data formats like excel spread sheets, PDF files, company sales graphs and pictures, and from other application resources. The data integration solution must provide all wanted information from any where quickly and smoothly.

The fundamental step in enterprise data integration is the automation of all data works. All large sized companies and corporations now have their own data integration centers or resource management departments for automating all customer information related practices. These departments will design customized integration tools and best practices to help corporation’s integration architecture. On the other hand, for medium and small sized companies with small capital investment, managing a separate department can be difficult. For these companies, now there are some enterprise data integration service/software providers offering their service.

Before implementing an enterprise data integration system, the company must design data integration architecture for the company using all their data resources. For that they have to track all operating business unites with in the organization, and have to give priorities to them. Healing broken data links, organizing a data source system - from which one can access resources, and information hubs, can greatly help in proper data integration.

Today there are many data integration software vendors and service providers in the market. You can find them by just searching on Internet. If you are looking for enterprise data integration software, look for one software vendor who offers customized software packages. Open source software packages are also available; you can customize them if you have enough technical assistance. If you are looking for an online service provider, enquire that the provider offers proper security to all your information. Also make sure that the online service provider has enough data integrating capacity.

This article has been published by eSalesTrack.com , a US based provider of on-demand CRM (Customer Relationship Management) and other application software such as Sales Force Automation and Data Integration Service.
